Cairns, Julia Ann Roop. 2010

Julia Ann Roop Cairns, 96, of New Windsor, died Saturday, March 20, 2010, at Friends House in Sandy Spring. Born April 21, 1913, in New Windsor, she was the daughter of the late Preston B. and Nettie B. Roop. She was the wife of Robert S. Cairns Jr., who died in 1984. She graduated from Miss Ayres School, New Windsor High School, Blue Ridge College and the University of Maryland. She taught at Manchester High School in Maryland and Hamden Hall School in New Haven, Conn. She owned and operated The Boxwood Antique Shop at The Dielman Inn in New Windsor for more than 40 years. She was a lifelong member of Pipe Creek Church of the Brethren. She was a member of the American Association of University Women. She was an active member of the Carroll County Historical Society and the New Windsor Heritage Committee. She was also a member of the Forest Oak Questers. Surviving are children and spouses Elizabeth A. and Richard Stonesifer, Robert S. and Alyce Nixon Cairns; grandchildren Scott R. Stonesifer and wife Jennifer, Matthew Hunter Cairns and Elizabeth Cairns Imperiale and husband Jack; great-grandsons Brendan R. and Aidan G. Stonesifer; sisters Esther R. Hough and Doris R. Wege; brother and sister-in-law Charles D. and Mary Roop; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by sisters Evelyn R. Miller, Kitty R. Obermiller and Irene B. Roop; brothers, John P. Roop and Louis G. Roop; and two nephews. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Pipe Creek Church of the Brethren. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to The Heifer Project International, P.O. Box 8058, Little Rock, AR 72203-8058; or to Pipe Creek Church of the Brethren, 26 Pipe Creek Road, Union Bridge, MD 21791.
