David Snider Babylon Jr., 82, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006, at his home after an extended illness.

Born Sept. 4, 1923, in Westminster, he was the son of the late D. Snider Babylon and Marion Cover Babylon. He was the husband of G. Evelyn Fluck Babylon, whom he married Oct. 16, 1948.

He and his wife were married by her father, the Rev. William A. Fluck, in Hatfield, Pa.

He was a 1941 graduate of Valley Forge Military Academy. He was one of the youngest captains commissioned in the U.S. Army during World War II. He graduated from Gettysburg College in January 1948 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics.

After graduation, he continued in a business, Cunocar Bookkeeping Service, begun in his college years. Many in Westminster may have memories of his green "office-on-wheels," in which he would travel from business to business. He sold his business in 1986 to retire, travel and enjoy his family and friends.

He enjoyed entertaining family and friends at his home on Willis Street.

Much of his life was dedicated to public service. He joined the Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Co. No. 1 on June 1, 1949. He served for many years as secretary/treasurer. Some members still recall how he stopped by the station every morning to "match for coffee," flipping a 1923 silver dollar.

He served as a Westminster councilman for 25 years, from 1964 to 1989, at which time he retired. For 16 of those years, he served as the Common Council president.

He was a member of Carroll Post 31 American Legion for more than 60 years, as well as a member of the Westminster Elks Lodge 2277, and a member and past president of the Westminster Lions Club for more than 50 years, for which he was named a Melvin Jones Fellow in 1994. He was a member and past president of Westminster Riding Club, of which his sister, Eleanor Cover Babylon, was a founding member.

He was an active member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church on Carroll Street in Westminster.

As a business professional, he served as president and board member of the Westminster Hardware Co. for many years. He served as a director and vicechairman of the Board of Carroll County Bank and Trust Co. from 1961 until 1999 as well as Mason-Dixon Bancshares from 1991 to 1999. He was on the Board of Directors of Piney Branch Golf & Country Club, the Raymond I. Richardson Foundation for Bowling Brook School and the Albaugh and Babylon Grocery Co.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughters and sons-in-law Marian Babylon Rognlien and Ronald L. Rognlien of Nokesville, Va., Caroline Babylon and Kevin Dayhoff of Westminster and Sarah Babylon Dorrance; son and daughter-in-law Col. William T. Babylon, U.S. Army (Ret.) and his wife, Lt. Col. Patricia Jean Cronen Babylon, U.S. Army (Ret.); grandchildren Marnie of Nokesville, Va., Franklin Thomas and his fiancée Rosalena Magroski, Elizabeth Anne Babylon and David Snider Babylon III, all of Anchorage, Alaska, and Jamie and Melissa of Mount Airy.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church, 21 Carroll St., Westminster, with the Rev. David B. Helfrich officiating. Entombment will be private at the family mausoleum at Krider's Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis St., Westminster and from 1 p.m. until time of service Saturday at the church. The Westminster fire department will hold a memorial service at 8:15 p.m. Friday.

Print in friendly format Send this term to a friend Bachman Mills [Towns, Cities and Other Areas]

The area of Bachman Mills lies along Bachman Valley Road where it crosses over the Big Pipe Creek, in an area dominated by large farms on rolling hills. There was a mill in this area as early as 1794, though at that point it was named Bowers Mill and was only renamed Bachman Mills later. Bachman Mills also had its own militia unit, founded in 1838 and named the Washington Blues. Like many of these small towns and named areas that no longer seem to have commerce, Bachman Mills was named for the mill that once was the center of the community, even long after the mill itself stops functioning. The roads named after these old mills are all over the county, reminding us constantly of the old mills and their importance to the development of the county.

One of the early businesses that helped generated economic growth in Carroll County was cigar-making and John T. Myers of Bachman Mills was an early cigar-maker in the area. Nearby Westminster even sprted an Anti-Nicotine Manufacturing Company, organized in 1885 and dedicated to promoting cigars without nicotine. TOther cigar makers sprang up in Manchester and Taneytown, as well as in Westminster.

In 1857, Wingate's Maryland Register shows David Bachman as the postmaster for Bachman Mills, with an annual compensation of $10.46.
