Hiester, Eli E.

Rev. Eli E. Hiester, a retired minister of Strausstown, Berks county, Pa., was born near Belleman's Church, in Centre township, January 14, 1830. He is a son of Thomas and a grandson of Daniel Hiester. The latter, who was born November 5, 1761, died April 16, 1827, at the age of sixty-five years, and is buried at Zion's Blue Mountain Church. His occupation was that of farming, and for many years he resided in Upper Tulpehocken township, where the name is well known and highly respected. Three times he was married, his last wife being Susanne Ammon, whose birth occurred May 4, 1782. She died October 17, 1862, at the advance age of eighty.

Thomas Hiester, the father of Eli, was born July 10, 1803. He grew to manhood on his father's farm and besides acquiring the usual knowledge of farm work, he learned the trade of wheelwright, which he followed during his long residence near Strausstown, in Upper Tulpehocken township.

He married Christiana Ebling, the daughter of Jacob Ebling. She was born at Upper Tulpehocken township, July 5, 1802, and died January 13, 1878, at the age of seventy-five years, five months, and eight days. On June 19, 1882, the husband, having lived to the advanced age of seventy-eight, was laid to rest beside his wife in the old cemetery at Zion's Blue Mountain Church. Their children were: Jonathan, who became a minister of the Reformed Church, and whose death occurred in Lebanon county, Pa., in 1900; Jacob, born in 1827, died in 1874 (he married Susanne Snyder, who was born in 1823, and died in 1875); Sarah, born in 1828, married Michael Klahr, her death occurring in 1861; and Eli E. Eli E. Hiester, being the youngest son, was privileged to receive greater educational advantages than his older brothers, in the pay schools of Upper Tulpehocken township, and the Boyertown Mount Pleasant Seminary, both of which he attended. After that he studied with his brother Rev. Jonathan to prepare for Franklin and Marshall College at Lancaster which he entered in 1855, graduating in 1859. After graduating he went to the Theological Seminary, at Mercersburg, Pa., to study Theology. He was ordained in 1865 at Pine Grove, Schuylkill county. He began his work in the ministry at Grantville, afterwards taking charge of the church at Friedensburg, Schuylkill county, where he remained six years. Later he came to Strausstown, Pa., where he has since resided. His ministerial career covered a period of fifteen years and though retired from active work, he occasionally fills the pulpit of the local church. A trade acquired in his younger days, that of watch and clock repairing, supplies occupation for many otherwise unemployed, hours. This, together with a half interest held in a fine farm of seventy-three acres, near Strausstown, brings a good income, which, at his age is something unusual for one who has given his best efforts in the service of the church. Rev. Hiester never married, finding the religious life all-sufficient for his happiness. He is one of the oldest residents of Strausstown, and held in the highest regards, not only by his fellow-citizens, but by all who have the privilege of knowing him.

Cleaver, Israel

Israel Cleaver, M.D. - A member of an old family of Pennsylvania, Dr. Israel Cleaver, of Reading, has won prominence in his chosen profession on Berks County, and as a leading physican of Reading at the present is influential in all endeavors for the public health, as well as widely successful in his private practice. Dr. Cleaver is now the oldest practicing physician of Reading, yet he is a man who lives always in the present and the future, looking backward only for the records of achievment which form guiding lights to present-day endeavor and bear direct significance to the constant attainment of higher levels in professional advance today.

The Cleaver name is one of honor, and dates back in Penbnsylvania to Derrick Cleaver, who settled in this section many years prior to the Revolution. His son John (of his second marriage) died in 1790, after a long and useful life. He also was married twice. Jonathan Cleaver, son of John and Catherine (Kline) Cleaver, was born in 1781, in Earl Township, Berks County, and became a successful woolen manufacturer, also held the rank of colonel in local military affairs until his death, which occurred in 1862.

George K. Cleaver, the next in line, was born May 16, 1816, died in 1897, and was the sixth child and third son of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Boyer) Cleaver. George K. Cleaver became a successful manufacturer of carpets, with interests centering in Reading. He married Christina Neiffer, who died in 1893, and they were the parents of eight children: 1. Dr. Israel, of further mention. 2. George W., who died in 1921. 3. Christian H., deceased. 4. Jonathan, deceased. 5. John W. of Reading. 6. James T., who died in April 1907. 7. Gertrude A, who became the wife of Linton Miller, and died, leaving two children, Earl and AlmaJ. 8. Charles E., deceased.

Israel Cleaver was born November 26, 1842, and is the oldest child of George K. and Christina (Neiffer) Cleaver. First attending the public schools of Reading, he later covered the high school course, then took up his preparations for his chosen profession under teh preceptorship of Dr. Henry Tyson, a successful physician of that day. Entering the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Cleaver was graduated from that institution in the class of 1863, receiving the degree of Doctor of Medicine, and with it his army commission. During his attendance at the university, Dr. Cleaver was made medical cadet of the Buttonwood Street Military Hospital, in the city of Philadelphia, then, upon his graduation, was appointed by Secretary of War Edward M. Stanton, assistant surgeon of the Mississippi Marine Brigade and Ram Fleet. This unit was especially formed for the purpose of keeping the Missisippi River clear of what was known as "bushwhackers" Equipped for bothland and water service, the brigade was active until the close of hostilities, when Dr. Cleaver received his honorable discharge in 1865. Returning immediately to his native State, he located in Luthersburg, Clearfield County, but about one year later, he removed to Phillipsburg, in Center County, where he was active in the practice of medicine until the year 1871. From that time until the spring of the following year, Dr. Cleaver devoted his attention to post-graduate study along special lines, then settled permanently in Reading, where he took up the practice of medicine. He has been largely successful, and grave responsibilities of a public nature have been placed in his hands. He served for many years as county medical inspector of the Pennsylvania Department of Health, and in charge of Clinic No. 37 (tuberculosis dispensary) his constructive efforts in the war against tuberculosis have counted in a marked degree for the progress which has been achieved in this vitally important crusade. He was, in 1898, on the executive committee of the One Hundred and Seventy-Fifth Anniversary, of Reading. In organized advance of a professional nature Dr. Cleaver holds a leading position, being a member of the American Medical Association, the Pennsylvania State Medical Society, the Lehigh Valley Medical Association, the Berks County Medical Society, and the Reading Medical Association. He has for many years been idenitfied with the Reading Hospital as a member of the board of managers, which he has served as secretary, also has long been a member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion. Fraternally he is affiliated with the Reading Lodge, No 549, Free and Accepted Masons; and General William H. Keim Post, No. 76, Grand Army of the Republic. He retains his affiliation with the Alumni Association of the University of Pennsylvania, and is a member of the Rotary Club of Reading. A member of St. Peter's Methodist Episcopal church, he serves on the official board of the church society.

Dr. Cleaver married, in 1866, Lorena Moore, daughter of Wilson Moore, of Clearfield County. Mrs. Cleaver died September 30, 1923, at the age of seventy-eight years. Of their children, Mildred died at the age of four years; and those surviving are: Wilbur M., manager of Gristridest Brothers, of New York City; Hattie, wife of Freeman Boas, of Reading; and Helen Guthrie, living at home, and is with the Sternbeerg School of Music, local branch. Mrs. Baer, her five daughters and sons-in-law were at teh bedside of the husband and father when he died. Dr. William F. Muhlenberg, of Reading, Pa., a life-long friend, was also at the death-bed.
