      <title>Chapter 19 - Manners and Customs</title>
      <link>http://usgensites.com/padelaware/modules/smartsection/item.php?itemid=1</link>
<description>MANNERS AND CUSTOMS&amp;mdash; HOW INHABITANTS OF DELAWARE COUNTY LIVED IN FORMER YEARS.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Houses.&amp;mdash; The progress of a nation is traced not in the life of an individual, who, from some personal or fortunate circumstance, was elevated for the time being above his fellows, but is found in the narrative of the daily lives of the people, whereby we learn how they were sheltered, fed, and clothed, and the manners and customs which marked them as a whole. Hence, believing as I do that civilization means nothing more than advanced cultivation, which brings as its results comforts and luxuries before unknown, as well as the general diffusion of knowledge in the arts and sciences, constituted the true annals of a people, I purpose, as briefly as I can, to present a sketch of how the inhabitants of Delaware County lived from the early settlement until within recent years.</description>
